Vitamin IV (Intravenous) Therapy

Vitamin Intravenous (IV) Therapy

Our bodies are amazing entities. At any given time there are hundreds of biochemical reactions that are occurring. Each one of these requires different vitamins, minerals or amino acids. Our diet is the most common source for these factors and other times we can obtain them from oral supplements. However, due to chronic stress, poor diets, environmental pollutants, genetic modifications and nutrient depleted soils, obtaining our vitamins and minerals has become more challenging than 50 years ago. Our bodies use some vitamins and minerals more during times of stress, digestion, exercise or illness.

Intravenous (IV) administration of vitamins, minerals and amino acids can achieve serum concentrations that cannot be obtained from oral supplementation. Oral supplementation is normally limited by the amount that your digestive system can absorb. Many people have issues with their digestive system which this leads to less than optimal absorption of your nutrients and vitamins.

Vitamin IVs safely deliver nutrients directly into your bloodstream allowing therapeutic dosages to be used to optimize your health and wellbeing. Vitamin IV infusions can be used for a variety of different conditions.

What to Expect

Each bag is specially formulated for you with a combination of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and sometimes botanicals. In order to receive a Vitamin IV Infusion or any treatment from our Naturopathic doctors you must complete an initial consult. This allows our Doctors to assess and ensure you are a good candidate for IV infusions. Some pre-existing health conditions require special modifications or it can be contraindicated. The visit allows your Naturopathic Doctor to determine the best custom formulation for you and run the appropriate tests. Most IV infusions take 45 minutes and during that time you will have a comfortable seat in our IV suite. Once the IV is running you can choose to rest, relax, read a book or catch up on the day’s memes.

Frequently asked questions about IV Infusions

What is a Vitamin Infusion?
Water soluble vitamins, minerals, amino acids and botanicals are mixed together into a bag of solution. The exact formula and concentration is determined by your health goals and needs. The most commonly used ones by our Naturopathic Doctors include Vitamin C, B complex, B12, B1, B5, B6, Magnesium, Calcium, Amino Acids, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, Manganese, Chromium, Glutathione, Echinacea and Licorice (Glycyrrhiza).

How often do I need an IV Infusion?
This varies drastically based upon your health and what your goals are. You may start by needing weekly treatments for a few weeks and then monthly or as needed.

Are IV Therapies covered by extended health insurance?
They are considered a treatment as they are administered in office and covered by most plans. However, if your plan only covers consults they may not be. It is best to check with your insurance provider in terms of what you are covered for.

Does it hurt?
The only part you will feel is the quick poke once the needle is inserted into your arm. Dr Kaler uses angiocath which means the needle doesn't remain in your arm during the infusion so you are free to move your arm as you please. Some bags can cause more discomfort depending on the minerals that are in it. If this is the case with you, it can be adjusted to make it more comfortable. Sometimes the position of the angiocath will cause discomfort. If you experience this let your Doctor know and she will adjust the position so you do not experience it.

Are IVs Safe?
In Alberta, IV therapy can only be administered by Naturopathic Doctors that have taken additional education and training. This allows our Naturopathic doctors to be aware of any issues that may arise before they occur. There are minor risks associated such as bruising and discomfort at the site of injection as a needle is being inserted into a vein. When administered by educated professionals IV infusions are extremely safe and effective.

What do I need to do to prepare for a treatment?
It is important to eat within the 3 hours prior to coming in for a treatment. Stable blood sugar allows you to tolerate the treatment better and prevent any side effects from occurring afterwards. Hydration is important and allows veins to be found easily.
